City Chicks and 3,000 pounds of food!

posted July 30, 2009

Some chicks with a Farmer from the market! City HarvestOn a (very) rainy Wednesday, five chicks grabbed their umbrellas and trekked to the Union Square Farmer’s Market to volunteer with City Harvest’s Food Rescue. After meeting our point person, Angela, we hit the ground running and visited each stand to distribute bags to the farmers.

The sky was good to us for a while, but eventually, as we were furiously bagging corn, the sky opened and well, let’s just say we went inside Barnes and Noble to dry off!

It was daunting how much food was left-over from the Farmer’s Market. We helped the farmer’s bag the extra food like peaches, lettuce, corn and bread. During a typical food rescue at Union Square Market, City Harvest volunteers collect over 3,000 pounds of food! The trucks deliver the rescued food to over 600 different places around the city including soup kitchens, schools and families in need. It was great to do another event with City Harvest (remember Skip Lunch and all the money we raised??).

At about 7:15pm, once the monsoon had subsided, we squished, slipped and slid our way home to dry off and reflect on this positive, fun experience.
